Is Your Shampoo Making You Tired?

During a Life Coaching session with a client this week, I learnt something surprising and interesting about a substance called dimethicone that I would like to share with you.

This is a client that I have treated with hypnotherapy at intermittent intervals throughout the year.  One of the issues that had been really getting her down was the inexplicable lack of energy that she was experiencing more and more.  Her doctor had run all the standard tests and found no reason for her unrelenting tiredness. They discussed the possibility that she may have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  She learned that there were further tests available but that they were very expensive.

She decided to have the tests done and when the results came back she discovered that she was suffering from dimethicone poisoning.  In other words, she had a treatable form of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Dimethicone, also known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is a silicone oil with distinctive properties that make it a useful ingredient in many skin and hair care products. It has many industrial applications as well, and is even an additive in some foods. People widely use products containing the compound, and generally report few adverse effects, although some individuals do have sensitivities to it. (http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-dimethicone.htm)

Simply put, my client was told that the silicone substance was coating the cells in her body, making it difficult for the energy signals to travel through her body.

So, if you have been struggling with excessive tiredness or chronic fatigue, it might be worth checking the ingredients in your hair/skincare products.

Life is supposed to feel good. If it doesn’t, you might not be doing it right.

Is it true to say that the most important thing for all of us, is to be able to feel as good as we can in every given moment?
Think about it. The material things that we desire, the experiences that we dream of having, the relationships we long for, the car, the job, the status, the perfect body, the health… we aspire to these things because we believe that having them will make us feel good.

It’s wonderful to aspire to making things better for yourself. When you are in a good frame of mind, it feels like fun to plan a trip or take up a new hobby or save up for a treat. Having goals and aspirations are basic needs and they are essential ingredients of emotional nutrition. However, when life gets you down, goals and aspirations often come from a deprivation or desperation state of mind.

It’s common that people inadvertently reduce their own ability to experience contentment or happiness because they become overly focused on their suffering. They pay too much attention to what is missing from their lives or to what isn’t working.

When people feel bad they look for something to help them change the feeling – so they focus on all the external factors that might be making them feel bad. The effort goes on trying to change what’s not right about their partner, job, finances, neighbours, possessions – but if these things can’t be changed, all they get for their effort is to feel cranky, depressed, frustrated, thwarted, victimised, deprived…. or even anxious.

Herein lays a trap because if you allow yourself to believe that you can only feel better if the external factors are changed, then you are putting your effort into changing the things that you have very little control over.

Often this approach to life is simply an habitual default pattern that can be changed. It is possible for people to learn ways of thinking, feeling and responding that can allow them to experience life with more ease and pleasure, regardless of their circumstances. When you create a healthier pattern of responding you will feel more in control of life.

We are each blessed with an ability to respond – a response-ability. When you are able to take responsibility for your response-ability, it ceases to be an autonomic reflex and becomes a tool for empowerment.

If you would like help to get you started, call me to discuss your situation. Let’s make a plan so that you can achieve a life that’s worth waking up for.

Hypnosis and immunity to Swine Flu

If you are worried about seasonal infections or viruses such as Swine Flu, then now is the time to take action and strengthen your immune system in a natural way.

One of the most influential factors in maintaining a healthy immune system is relaxation, particularly if you are the sort of person that runs on high stress or anxiety.

Being able to manage stress is an important factor in keeping your immune system functioning well.

It is often beyond our control to influence the factors that contribute to stress (work, finances, redundancy etc) but what we can do, is manage ourselves well, to reduce the impact.

It has been known for a long time that stress affects the immune system and our ability to fend off invading infections such as the Swine Flu bug.

Psychological stress such as anxiety has been shown to increase susceptibility to viral infection. Subjects exposed to stress showed increases in infection rates from 74% to 90%, and clinical colds rose from 27% to 47%. (McEwen & Stellar, 1993)

Relaxation techniques are known to be immune-enhancers and one of the most effective of these is a deep hypnotic relaxation, particularly when geared specifically to strengthening the individual’s immune function. The use of hypnosis not only teaches the body to relax and restore, but also contributes to a positive mental attitude and an optimistic outlook. These factors make a big difference in how the body fights disease.

At certain times of year, seasonal changes often bring an increased vulnerability to infections and illness, so as summer draws into autumn, I am making a special offer of a one off session to boost your immunity and increase your ability to regularly relax.  This session will be geared to your specific needs.  You will come away with a personal CD recording that you can use as often as you want to, at no extra cost. Call me to arrange an appointment to suit you.

Here are some other tips that will help you to stay healthy.

  • Make sure that you eat well, by including natural whole-foods in your diet, particularly lots of dark green vegetables and brightly coloured fruits & veg. These will give your body the nutrition and antioxidants needed for optimal health. Also include grains, pulses, seeds, nuts and the essential omega fats that are found in fish oil or flax oil.
  • Take pro-biotic supplements and eat foods that encourage good gut flora, such as live yogurt, miso, sauerkraut.  Approximately 70% of your immune function relies on having healthy levels of good bacteria in your gut.
  • Make sure that you are drinking enough water, particularly in the hotter weather.  If you want your body to be fighting fit, it needs to be hydrated.  Water is also excellent for helping the body to rid itself of toxins.
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol, caffeine and refined sugars
  • Make sure you get enough good quality sleep.  If this is a difficult issue for you, hypnotherapy can help you to get restful nights sleep.
  • Get regular exercise
  • Do something nice for yourself on a regular basis.

Stay healthy this winter – take time to relax.
