Stress: “.. a state arising when the demands placed on the individual threaten to exceed their ability to cope.”
It’s an over-used word isn’t it? Who among us has never claimed to be stressed? Some people thrive on it, whilst others feel overwhelmed by the demands of it.
Each person has his or her own experience of it. For some, the smallest thing can feel overwhelming, whereas others might have a higher threshold for coping.
It’s important to remember that when well managed, stress can be very helpful – when working to deadlines or performing, it can be a real motivating force.
Whatever your circumstances or your experience, it is important not to underestimate the harmful impact of prolonged stress. As part of your inbuilt survival mechanism, stress is designed to be a short-lived response to an emergency situation (fight/flight) and as such, places enormous demands on physical, mental and emotional resources.
If not managed well, the human being is more than capable of mounting and sustaining stress for prolonged periods, sometimes even years! The long-term effects of this can be devastating.
Physically, excessive or ongoing stress leads to health problems such as headaches, insomnia, stomach complaints, ulcers, IBS, eating issues, skin disorders, lowered libido, infertility, impotence, high blood pressure, heart problems, general agitation and adrenal exhaustion.
Emotionally, prolonged periods of stress hormones in the system can lead to excessive amounts of anxiety, panic, worry, pessimism, obsessive behaviours, anger, frustration, rage, jealousy, guilt, remorse… It could be an endless list.
Psychologically, over time a person’s self image will suffer, as stress symptoms such as confusion, brain fog, poor memory, an inability to retain information, lack of organisation, procrastination, all set in and become part of the person’s core identity.
Let’s face it; it’s not a good way to live, is it? So what can you do about it? It’s important to realize that we can’t always control the things that happen in life. What we can control is how we respond to those things.
You can begin by introducing a few small changes into your life, which, over a very short time will have noticeable benefits.
1. Take breaks
